Working With A Student Visa In Australia

Working With A Student Visa In Australia
Favorite

Many international students work and study at the same time.

While this is generally allowed on a student visa, it is important to be aware of the conditions that apply to you if you intend to work while you’re studying in Australia.

You should also be aware of and have a full understanding of your rights and obligations as an employee.

How many hours can you work?

International students on a student visa are able to work for a maximum of 40 hours every fortnight when the semester is in session.

You can, however, work unlimited hours during the period your higher institution.

Your employer might ask you to confirm your institution’s holiday period. If this is the case.you’ll make a request for this with your institution and hand it over to the employer.

It is important to note that enrolment in summer or winter school is considered as part of the period the semester is in session. This means the 40-hour work limitation still applies in that case.

Postgraduate research students on a student visa are allowed to work unlimited hours during their studies.

If you fall within this category, you need to be aware that under visa conditions you are to maintain full-time schedule and you need to finish your program within the time stated in your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE).

Any dependent family member that is included in your student visa is also allowed to work.

Visit the Department of Home Affairs website for more information about this topic.

Tax file number

A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique number issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to individuals and organisations to help manage tax and other government services.

If you want to be paid for the work you do in Australia and if you also want to pay the right amount of tax then you need to provide your TFN to your employer.

How it works is that when you start working, your employer will collect your TFN details by asking you to fill a Tax File Number declaration.

Visit the Australian Taxation Office website for more information on the TFN and how to apply for it.

Finding Employment

There are various options available to you to explore in getting work. Your first port of call should be the Careers Centre of your institution.

There you will find some useful resources and services aimed at helping find work during your studies and also when you graduate.

Find out also if your institution has a job portal that lists jobs available to the students. Make sure to regularly check the portal for work that you can apply for.

You need to have a standard and up to date resume with a cover letter to be able to apply for work.

You should have your resume and cover letter tailored to match each job that you apply for to give you a better chance of getting the job.

The career centre of your higher institution would be able to provide you with some assistance with your resume and cover letter.

There are job listing websites in Australia that also post jobs that international students can apply for.

Check these sites regularly for possible job opportunities. Some of the well-known job sites in Australia are:

  • Seek.;com.au
  • Indeed.com.au
  • Careerone.com.au
  • Jora.com.au

As mentioned earlier, you have rights and responsibilities as an employee so it is important to be aware of them. For example, Australian workers have rights that cover the following:

  • maximum weekly hours of work;
  • entitlements to leave and public holiday pay;
  • flexible working arrangements;
  • the provision of a Fair Work Information Statement; and
  • notice of termination and redundancy pay.

Check out the Fair Work Ombudsman’s website for more information on this topic.
