How Mobile Technology is Changing Universities In Australia

Mobile technology is arguably an aspect of technology that is developing and advancing at a faster rate.

This is increasingly having a great impact on campus life in universities with technologies such as driverless buses and cybersecurity tech measures.

Modern-day universities are tasked with providing ready and easy access to content on any device.

This must, of course, be balanced against the proper protection of private information and valuable data from cybersecurity threats and privacy breaches.

Mobile technology has the capability to transform the customer experience for a business. The same applies to universities where the students are the customers.

It is important for universities to have the right mobile technology in place so as to help their students have a better study experience and also reduce the risk of students withdrawing from university.

New university students including international students often find it challenging to cope with the many mobile technology tools that are available to them.

You would often find them dealing with as many as 10 apps at the same time during the course of their studies.

Case Studies From Universities In Australia:

Universities have an obligation to develop means of helping their students manage these suites of mobile technology apps in order to make their campus experience less daunting and more rewarding.

For example, this led Curtin University in Australia to develop a student experience app called Elsie.

Students are able to use Elsie to get access to their lectures, find their class locations, contact their tutors and rate content.

Almost all the first-year students were able to successfully adapt to the new and they were able to do so quickly. This was achieved across all the Curtin University campuses in Australia and South East Asia.

With mobile technology, students are able to choose not to physically attend lectures if not compulsory but rather they can watch their lectures anywhere on mobile devices.

This is made even more possible with the availability of Wi-Fi coverage on campuses of universities such as Curtin University.

Griffiths University has a student population of about 40,000. About half of those students study online and out of that number, 10,000 students study online only.

These are students that do not need to physically attend lectures so the university has a library of recorded videos that the students can access on any mobile device at any time.

The same situation applies at the University of South Australia, which currently runs 11-degree programs fully online.

The university has been able to put in place a high level of support for its online students to ensure that they get a seamless study experience during their programs.

One of the ways the University of South Australia achieves this is through an app that gives every student access to their schedules, assignment reminders and exam results.

The app caters for 35,000 users, which is almost all the students of the university.

Mobile technology also allows universities to perform administrative tasks such as approving new hires, managing budgets and completing timesheets online.

This way constraints are removed and it leads to an improvement in efficiency and cost reduction.
